Sargon the Great founded the Akkadian civilization. His city was known as Akkad and took control of the other city-states. When his city was attacked by Uruk, a powerful Sumerian city, Sargon fought back and successfully conquered Uruk .

Sargon the Great was able to conquer all the Sumerian city-states. He was able to unite Southern and Northern Mesopotamia. The Sumerians and the Akkadians began to form alliances and work together.

Sargon the Great ruled the land from 2334 to 2279 BC. He established the first Semitic dynasty when he conquered the whole of southern Mesopotamia. His territory included the parts of Syria, Anatolia and Elam.
